"The best word I can use to describe his writing is addictive."--JAMES ROLLINS, New York Times best selling author

From USA Today bestselling author Brett Battles comes a twisted and suspenseful dive into the unknown.

Something happened that night in the woods at Camp Red Hawk. But all Joel and Leah can recall is sneaking out for a late hike with five camp friends, and that only the two of them and their friend Mike returned.

They have no memory of what happened to the others. No memory of anything after leaving the camp.

In the years that follow, they realize something has changed inside of them. They are different from others, in ways they never should be. In ways that send their lives down disturbing and terrifying paths.

As they grapple with adulthood, their only hope for understanding why they've been altered lies with them finding each other again. But how is that possible when their memories of one another have been erased?

Here's what others are saying about Brett Battles's other work

"Battles keeps layering on the suspense until you can hardly breathe." — Linwood Barclay, New York Times bestselling author

"Hyponically gripping." — New York Times bestselling author Gayle Lynds

"Highly recommended." — Library Journal (starred review)

Mine eBook Brett Battles

Brett Battles hasn't disappointed me yet. This is a tightly bound story told from four converging viewpoints. Leah, Mike and Joel are bound together by a shared experience that none of them remembers. Yet, they are all changed by it and somehow driven by it. The Reclaimer is frightening in her hold. Each of the three is hers and she does not share. The final battle of wills is amazingly well written and leaves you with just the right amount of tension. No cliffhanger ending, well resolved, great character development and just an all around enjoyable story.

Mine eBook Brett Battles Reviews

stayed up all night reading this.

I don't want to include any spoilers, so this is vague this reminded me strongly of a series of books from a few years ago. that series had a very similar setup, but it didn't play it out very well, and I eventually gave up on it. I know that other series was really popular, but it was overly complicated and I felt like the themes got in the way of the story.

THIS book, by contrast, was really tight, and suspenseful, with clear strong themes that aligned with everything in the story.

there was even one scene that had exactly the same setup a student performs better than expected, and is called out for cheating by school officials. in THIS book, the student did exactly what the character in the other book should have done.

this book was so very, very good.
This is a different style of book to Battles Jonathan Quinn series so if you are expecting something similar, prepare to be disappointed. Which I was, by the way, and esp. because if felt slow to start and I was concerned that I'd just bought a dud. Then, a couple of chapters in, I clicked into the groove of the story and it was an enjoyable journey from then on. But if this does not click, you are likely going to want to be writing a 1-star review, though hopefully you'll provide more useful details than just the "awful" comment of one of them.

The novel seems thriller at first, then supernatural, then sci fi. But whatever style you decide, Battles does a terrific job of both keeping the mechanism of the novel shrouded in mystery until very much near the end. That's actually quite a feat and he almost does the impossible of keeping the mystery all the way through. And I found the mystery itself an OK premise, which is unusual because most of these kind of "what actually happened out there" stories end up with a mundane - or totally outlandish - explanation. Battles also never lights up the "why" of what was happening, not in any detail at least, which I found satisfying but some others might not like. He also builds a strong sense of an implacable enemy in play, and that really came through in the ending, which is a very untraditional cliffhanger.

If you read this you will see that it is hard to write a critique that does not include spoilers, but I can say this is a personality driven novel and while there is action it is driven by the personalities, not the other way around. It moves along briskly enough but is not one of those breakneck potboilers rushing from one improbable action sequence to yet another improbable action sequence. And despite the protagonists being "different from others, in ways they never should be" this is not really a book about young people trying to fit into their peer groups. So reviews that it targets YA did not feel right to me.

Anyway, it's Battles being different and if you can work through the slow start and accept that Quinn aint gunna make an appearance, I think you stand a good chance of enjoying it as I did.
Brett Battles is a great writer. I have read several of his novels and enjoy his originality. Mine is by far his most creative endeavor yet and I hope it is the beginning of a series? Mine is a complex story starting with the very title Mine, which as a pronoun means a form of the possessive case of I, but as a noun means an excavation made in the earth In this novel the title means BOTH DEFINITIONS! It is important to grasp that early on as the “double entendre” is an important part of this unique story. Another salient point is NOT TO GIVE UP TOO EARLY ON THE STORY! It starts rather simplistic and seems to be a pre-teen story of summer camp, au contraire good reader it is so much more! So continue reading.
This is a very tough story to review without giving away numerous spoilers that are key to Mr. Battles ingenious storytelling. So, let me just say that as you continue reading the story evolves from a summer camp late night exploration of summer camp, something we all have done, to a horror worthy of an early Stephen King story. Yet, there is always this nagging, niggling thought in the back of one’s mind, “What IF...............”
No gratuitous language, sex or violence. Just great writing in the style of HP Lovecraft or Arthur C. Clarke as a collaboration Horror mixed with Aliens.
Character development was excellent and a central theme of this wonderful story.
So many books, so many stories, so little time! So when something original comes along I must blow the clarion trump to serious readers that here is something new and different yet interesting and thought provoking. Obviously, this tale will probably become a series of sorts but for the life of me I can’t see how or where it will go? But I know it will, and is not that the fun AND THE MYSTERY! Thank you Mr. Battles and may you live long, prosper and continue to write great stories!!
